What is the Crossfit Open?
Since 2007 The CrossFit Games has been on a mission to crown the fittest man and woman in the world. Not an easy undertaking.
Measure your Fitness
Before we even begin to think about who the fittest individuals are, we must first understand what fitness even means. As CrossFit defines it, fitness is measured as work capacity across broad time and modal domains. “Broad time domains” means having the ability to perform well in several time domain workouts ranging from the short burst high-intensity five-minute workouts to the long endurance paced 30 minute AMRAPs. “Broad modal domains” means having the ability to perform well at the 10 general physical skills: agility, accuracy, balance, coordination, endurance, flexibility, power, strength, speed and stamina. A weightlifter may be able to snatch 375 pounds, but can he do 10 pull-ups? A gymnast may be able to do 35 unbroken ring muscle ups, but can he squat 375 pounds? A marathon runner will have amazing endurance but may lack the power to jump on top of a box.
So the CrossFit Open is the first step to finding the overall fittest man and woman on earth (the Jack of All Trades if you will). How? CrossFit makes The Open, open. Open to anyone and everyone who wants to test their abilities on a worldwide stage and prove their fitness.
Five Weeks Five Workouts
Over five weeks everybody who signs up for the CrossFit Open will perform one workout per week and submit their score on the CrossFit leaderboard. The CrossFit Games will release the workout each Thursday evening and all the athletes will have until the following Monday evening to perform the workout and submit their score to the online leaderboard. At the end of the Crossfit Open the top 20 athletes in the world, as well as the fittest man and woman in each country will be selected to compete in the CrossFit Games in Madison, WI.
Why should YOU do the Open?
We hear it all the time. “Why would I do the Open? “I’m not going to the Games!” “Besides, I don’t want to see how low I rank on the leaderboard!” If you find yourself making these comments then you are missing the point of what the CrossFit Open is all about. It’s about our community. Not just our box’s community, but also the entire CrossFit community in the world. Last year 429,157 athletes registered for the CrossFit Open in over 10,000 CrossFit affiliates in 175 countries around the globe! Wow! Don’t you want to be a part of that? This is the only time of the year we can all come together and have fun competing and completing the same workouts. We will motivate one another to push harder, to complete one more rep, or add one more pound. There have been many personal records and goals achieved in the Open, and as your coaches, we want to see that happen to YOU as well. Even if you are not the fittest man or woman in the world, you will nevertheless improve your own level of fitness, while having fun and motivating others.
How to sign up
Just go to games.crossfit.com and register online. It will cost $20 to register. The Open begins February 21 and will end on March 25.
